Fuzz was the first distortion pedal type. And the retro sound of vintage units from the '60s remains coveted by guitarists to this day. The all-analog FZ-1W was created through an in-depth analysis of many legendary pedals and detailed Waza craftsmanship. It delivers the inspiring sound, feel and vibe of classic fuzz, in a reliably modern design. And like all Waza Craft pedals, the FZ-1W features premium components for top-quality performance, and an extended range for maximum tonal versatility.
When introduced in the 1960s, fuzz pedals changed the way electric guitarists played. They gave them a bold and aggressive new voice that redefined the sound of rock music forever. In those early days, innovative pedal builders tweaked and refined fuzz circuits based on the creative input of many now legendary guitarists. Ultimately, this led to a small number of remarkable designs that became the benchmark for the wide spectrum of musicians.
During the development of the limited edition TB-2W Tone Bender, we researched and analyzed many vintage fuzz pedals, gaining a lot of knowledge along the way. This experience inspired us to redefine the classic fuzz effect with our unique Waza craftsmanship and expertise. Unlike previous Waza Craft models, the FZ-1W is not a reproduction of an earlier design. This pedal is our modern take on vintage fuzz. He carries the number "1" in his name to show our deep respect for the classic circuits that helped shape the sound of rock guitars, and brought the effects pedal industry to what we all love today.
The simple circuitry of the most sought after vintage fuzz units produces bright and aggressive sounds with a long sustain. They are also very sensitive to playing dynamics. And the best designs make it possible to make the sound cleaner by turning back the volume knob on the guitar. But these classic pedals are also known for their inconsistency - even between models of the same design. And variables such as age, battery type, temperature and more can have a dramatic effect on their sound and performance.
Backed by Waza innovation, the FZ-1W lets you enjoy all the great musical properties of vintage fuzz without the drawbacks. Though inspired by historic circuits, this pedal presents a completely new BOSS approach, fueled by our forward-thinking perspective and in-depth knowledge of effects design. By using top-quality silicon transistors, we've created a unique circuit that delivers authentic sound and response while maintaining stable performance regardless of temperature or operating conditions. In addition, our modern approach offers far more tonal possibilities than the vintage designs, with higher gain, less noise, deeper tone control and more.
With the Vintage Mode of the FZ-1W, BOSS has redefined the classic fuzz voice with more gain and a wider expressive range. The sound is raspy and assertive without being harsh. And you can smoothly transition from heavy fuzz to crunch to crystal clear, simply by adjusting the volume of your guitar. The powerful Tone knob simultaneously controls the high and low frequencies, allowing you to choose a variety of different fuzz colors. And by turning the Fuzz knob down and increasing the level, the FZ-1W works great as a boost to your amp and other gain pedals.
Modern Mode delivers a more refined and versatile fuzz voice, with focused mid-range and a fatter tone. That makes it ideal for all contemporary music genres. The gain range is even wider than in Vintage Mode. And if you crank the Fuzz knob beyond three hours, you'll conjure up a rich, singing sustain for inspired solo playing. The Tone knob offers another tuning that lets you fine-tune the brightness without changing the midrange, so your sound always resonates. And using the Modern Mode as a boost gives you a good dose of spice with a rich, mid-driven character.
From the beginning, BOSS engineers have been committed to generating the best guitar sounds, using every necessary technology. Ranging from old-school analog circuits to high-tech DSP. The Waza Craft range enthusiastically continues this spirit and philosophy. It delivers exceptional tonal and touch response, delivered by carefully selected analog components, refined circuitry and a meticulous eye and ear for detail. In Japan, 'Waza' is a term used for art and technology. And these special edition pedals proudly bear the Waza symbol. They represent the very best in BOSS design and craftsmanship.
